The Invisible Canyon - A Name That Tells a Story
In the northern part of Montenegro, deep within the Durmitor mountain range, lies a canyon that remained a mystery for centuries. The Komarnica River, flowing through the canyon, literally disappears between the rocks - becoming invisible. Hence the name: Nevidio, derived from the Montenegrin word "nevidljiv" meaning "invisible."
The 1965 Conquest
While nearly all of Europe's canyons had been explored by the mid-20th century, Nevidio remained unconquered. It wasn't until 1965 that a group of brave mountaineers managed to traverse the entire canyon for the first time. This makes it the last conquered canyon on the old continent - a title that gives it a special mystique.
The reason it remained unexplored for so long lies in its geography: extremely narrow passages (some only 25cm wide), towering cliff faces, and the wild flow of the river made it virtually inaccessible. Even today, with modern equipment, passing through Nevidio demands respect for nature's raw power.
The expedition team that first conquered Nevidio described the experience as "walking through a cathedral of stone" - the walls rising hundreds of meters on either side, with only a sliver of sky visible above.
The Canyon Today
Spanning 1.6 kilometers, Canyon Nevidio offers an unforgettable experience today: cliff jumps up to 8 meters high, squeezing through incredibly narrow passages, and sliding down naturally formed water slides. Our team has over a decade of experience and has completed more than 400 successful tours through this canyon.
Located about 100km from Montenegro's capital Podgorica and 25km from the mountain town of Žabljak, Nevidio is accessible yet feels completely remote once you enter its depths. The canyon is part of the larger Durmitor region, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Why It Matters
Canyon Nevidio isn't just an adventure - it's a piece of European exploration history. When you walk through its narrow passages, you're following in the footsteps of those 1965 pioneers, experiencing the same awe that they felt when they first laid eyes on what had been hidden for millennia.
The canyoning tour costs €110 per person and includes full equipment, a licensed guide, insurance and professional photos and videos.
